Assisting in the careful stewardship of Illinois' natural resources while ensuring a healthy livelihood for all the people of the state is a challenging task.
Similar to biological systems, sustainable economic systems must remain diverse and productive. But keeping our quality of life healthy requires careful planning, unbiased foresight, productive partnerships, and creative application of human ingenuity.
As a non-regulatory government agency, the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center seeks to inhabit that sweet spot where environmental awareness, human needs and robust commerce come together for the benefit of generations -- today's and tomorrow's.
1987's Brundtland Report, titled "Our Common Future," came closest to the poetry of this notion, writing "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
Sustainability is hard. It requires systems thinking. Solve one problem and many other problems can emerge without warning. ISTC research, technical assistance and outreach programs are designed to see the larger processes and build the productive partnerships to aspire to systems thinking.
