The presence of steryl glucosides in biodiesel can potentially become a problem for fuel quality. Our group has been successful in preparing and analyzing samples for campesteryl-glucopyranoside, stigmasteryl-glucopyranoside, and sitosteryl-glucopyranoside. Samples are prepared by solid phase extraction, derivatized with bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoro-acetamide, and analyzed by ion trap gas chromatography mass spectrometry. With a 1-gram sample, we are able to achieve a detection limit of 5 mg/kg for individual steryl glucosides.
