Nancy Holm

Nancy Holm is the Assistant Director for Sponsored Research, Public Engagement, and Communications (SRPEC). She joined the staff of ISTC in August 2006. She oversees the ISTC Sponsored Research Program which funds research projects through the State of Illinois’ Hazardous Waste Research Fund and she manages the publication of final reports from those projects.

Ms. Holm also is in charge of Public Engagement activities for ISTC such as the planning the Sustainability Seminar series, coordinating outreach at sustainability fairs or events, and organizing conferences and workshops. She also oversees ISTC communications - news releases, reports, website development and content.

Education

  • B.A. degree in Biology and Chemistry from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa
  • M.S. degree in Oceanography and Limnology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison

Prior Professional Experience

  • Education specialist at the Champaign Unit 4 Science Center
  • Assistant limnologist at the IL State Geological Survey with their Lake Michigan Program. (studied degradation of lake trout spawning habitat in the lake; bluff erosion; compiled an extensive computerized bibliography on Lake Michigan research publications from the past 60 years)
  • Research specialist in Civil & Mineral Engineering Dept., University of Minnesota (acid rain and aquifer studies)
  • Research specialist at the Limnological Research Center, University of Minnesota (zooplankton, blue-green algae, and nutrient studies)
  • Researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (nutrients; phytoplankton studies)
  • Internship at Argonne National Laboratory (plutonium, arsenic, and cadmium uptake by phytoplankton in Lake Michigan).

Research Interests

  • Environmental Research on aquatic nutrient cycling; effects on biota from the degradation of aquatic habitat; pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the environment; electronic waste; and plastics pollution
  • Biochar Research for use as soil amendment; for contaminant remediation; and for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
