ISTC does research on and provides innovative solutions to emerging contaminants. It also develops innovative processes to eliminate, recycle or re-purpose waste streams. ISTC's researchers receive funding through the State of Illinois as well as external grants. Center researchers have collaborated with scientists and engineers with diverse expertise from the Prairie Research Institute, universities in Illinois and beyond, and other institutions and businesses as well as manufacturing.

In addition, ISTC conducts applied research on industrial and environmental systems to advance sustainability within Illinois and the nation. Its activities are characterized by the application of scientific principles to industrial practices to promote resource conservation, material utilization efficiency, health, and safety. Supported by a staff of both engineers and chemists, ISTC works closely with industrial, academic, and governmental partners to provide sustainable solutions for management of high salinity brines, feedstock development for biofuels and biolubricants, and pharmaceuticals removal from wastewater treatment plants and concentrated animal feeding operations effluent. Also, ISTC researchers have expertise in emerging containment research and analytical method development.
