Hazardous Waste Research Fund

ISTC oversees the Illinois Hazardous Waste Research Fund (HWRF). It is a special fund established by the Illinois legislature in 1985. HWRF has supported over 250 research projects since its start. The fund supports projects aimed at investigating solutions to:

  • waste management (e.g., the prevention, recycling, and toxicity reduction of hazardous waste),
  • pollution prevention,
  • water quality and conservation,
  • protection of groundwater, and
  • other environmental and public health issues that are important to Illinois.

Besides providing funding to ISTC researchers for relevant projects, academic organizations, businesses, and non-profit organizations have also received funding for past projects. Recently, the fund has supported projects within ISTC and its sister surveys in PRI.

The HWRF project database captures information and all publications from these projects. The project database is undergoing renovations to bring it up to modern standards. The new interface should be available in FY20.
